He kicked out some really great stuff in his earlier years and the best of the best is this one - Play It Again, Sam. You can read the product description for plot but in a nutshell - A neurotic guy goes through a dry spell after his wife leaves and he falls for his best friends wife. The story , while excellent movie material in itself, ties in with Allens, (played by Woody Allen), love of the movie Casablanca. We end up with a What would Bogart do? inner fantasy that helps Allen as he gets back into the dating scene. Some true gems in this film are when Allen and Linda over use the word MATURE. Another is a date who is addicted to sex and tells Allen how much and often she loves to copulate - and yet Allen fails to score. As he leaves his says to himself, "How did I misread those signs?" The best scene is when Allens two friends arrive to his apartment with his blind date. Allen is so nervous and completely screws up the first impression. All he can manage to do, when the two are introduced, is grunt. This scene is likely one of the top ten best humorous scenes of all time. The whole movie is filled with great one liners and classic Woody Allen humor. Take a neurotic, nervous, movie romantic, intelligent man and put him into his worst nightmare - the dating scene - and see what happens. The cast works very well with each other. These people seem like friends you might already know. The environments are a bit dated but I love this about the movie. That is the REAL 70's in the background, not a studio rendered set made in a warehouse. THE BOTTOM LINE The best Woody Allen movie ever made has one of the funniest scenes in movie history. Intelligent, funny, lovable main character. Rated PG but leans towards PG-13 IMO. Must see film, likely will want to add this to your collection as you will miss some of the jokes the first time you see it and you will want to see it every couple of years - it's that good!
