Black Beauty (DVD, 1999)

I bought the Black Beauty DVD for my son. As a child I watched the original with my Grandmother and upon her request decided to obtain a copy for my son. I was a bit leary about the fact it was a remake, but turned out to be pleasantly surprised.
The movie is good quality and sticks with the story as much as the original. There was a birth scene that may be a bit graphic for some, but it only lasted a matter of seconds.
All in all it is a great family movie. My son is 2 and he watched almost the entire thing in one sitting. I think that says enough!

This is a great family movie! My daughter, 7, watches this movie over and over again. It is one of those stories you will remember forever. This is a classic that will stand the test of time and one you certainly want in your movie collection if you have children!

The only reason I purchased the DVD was to see Sean Bean's performance. Unfortunately, the packaging and promotion of this film erroneously bills Sean Bean as "the star" of the film, yet he appears in only four scenes with less than five lines of dialogue. Sean Bean is only in the first 15 minutes of the movie. So this was a huge disappointment to me. This movie was released around the same time as "Goldeneye" the James Bond movie which Sean Bean had a major co-starring role and that film was a huge hit. I think the studio that produced "Black Beauty" was just trying to cash in on Sean Bean's success in "Goldeney" and use false advertising to overstate his participation in "Black Beauty". Just wanted to warn Sean Bean fans to only expect a very small "bit part" from him. Well, yes he looks lethally gorgeous, scrumptious yummy so handsome, good looking and gives his usual masterful, strong performance! So although he's only in a tiny bit of the film - for Bean Buffs you'd enjoy the fleeting glimpse of a performance in a sorely underwritten role.

However, overall this is a wonderful, wholesome clean-cut family film parents can enjoy with their kids. The costumes, sets, cinematography are gorgeous. This is a very glossy, visually appealing film with lush production values. The cast is very strong and gives excellent performances. David Thewlis and Eleanor Bron are wonderful in their roles - always known as wonderful character actors. The plot is fairly simplistic, but remember this is a film aimed at grammar school children. It's just such a relief to see a wholesome family picture with no violence, no sex, no exploding buildings.
The film will give small children a good sense of morals and ethics in a subtle way - without hitting the audience over the head with a hammer and overtly moralistic heavy handedness.

I was disappointed to see so little of Sean Bean - he's the only reason I wanted to see this film - but after his part was finished in the early portion of the film....I still was drawn in by a compelling story, narrative development and a lovely script. This film is a classic!

There are many other films which allegedly are "family pictures" but still have LOTS of violence - like "National Treasure" which got a PG rating but still had too much violence for small children (although Sean Bean is excellent in "National Treasure" also. So "Black Beauty" bills itself as a "family picture" and it actually deserves that title.

I highly recommend this movie for children of all ages!

One of the most fantastic movies of all times, was a great book, a classic. Movie for all ages that love horses.

We bought this as a christmas present for our children. They love horses and they loved this movie.

Beautiful scenery of English countryside. Loved Jim Carter and his assistant who later on buys Beauty. Sad to see when Beauty was passed around but unfortunately he wound up with better owners. I could of strangled that high brow matron who wanted Beauty's straps bridles tied very tight and especially when the other mare was mistreated...

I had been looking for this DVD for years, but was unable to find a good one. So I decided to try Ebay. The very first time I searched I found it!!..It is of excellent quality, still wrapped in original paper when I received it. A brand new DVD for a fraction of the cost, and of such good quality, and a movie that my Grandchildren & I will treasure and enjoy watching time & time again.

Along with the obvious "horse" story, there is enough action to satisfy the whole family. wonderful classic story.

I love animals, especially horses. Had one of my own as a young girl and now volunteer at a therapeutic horse ranch. Horses are magnificant and love to hear them talk to each other.

great movie fast shipment i bought this for my husband for valentines day and he loves it we have been wanting this movie for a very long time now. I got o0n ebay ang finally found it at a reasonable price

I loved this version. The narration of the film by the horse gives this an interesting perspective (the animal's viewpoint) which is so often lost in modern films. It is not corny, as the horse's lips don't pretend to speak, so it's not irritating. My 5-year-old daughter asks for it again and again. It speaks volumes of the ethical treatment of animals and of human relationships and responsibilities without being too graphic or violent. I have watched parts of the 2004 version by mistake, and had to turn it off quickly - definitely not the same.

The DVD was new and came in original plastic wrap. It's cover is appealing, and reminds me of the Black Beauty book I read to myself, my children, and now to my grandchildren. We all love it. This year for Christmas I gave most of our grandchildren books. Haley, who's seven, loves horses; so her presents included the hardback addition of the book, and this Black Beauty DVD. She was very excited.

I PURCHASED THE DVD FOR MY SON, HAVING SEEN IT BEFORE, I KNEW HE WOULD LOVE IT, HE'S STILL TALKING ABOUT IT, IT MAY BE A BIT DRAWN OUT BUT ITS WORTH THE WAIT, ITS A GREAT CLASSIC FOR ALL TO ENJOY!!!!!
