Few bands can claim the success or critical acclaim of a debut album, than Pearl Jam and their initial CD - Ten! Released in 1991, this was a pivotal CD in the Grunge era; selling more copies than Nirvana's Nevermind - the poster child for this music genre! Pearl Jam achieved more fame than they ever expected or indeed wanted with this roaring , rocking album. Eddie Vedder has a strong almost haunting voice as he sings deeply personal lyrics - take the Beautiful, strong yet highly emotional! The there's Jeremy - a superb and to the point song which is obscured by the fact that the video received more attention with the horrifying images of a classroom shooting which alludes to the protagonist killing himself infront of those who taunted him! The lyrics show talent and thought and the song is so melodic and listenable! Evenflow - though not one of my favorites as I feel it is overplayed on the airwaves today, simply rocks and Alive again combines twisted lyrics with work that simply rocks and indeed works! Oceans takes thier musical direction in a whole new turn, the deep just kicks it up a notch again! Eddie Vedder and his distinctive vocals along with deep, emotive and personal lyrics, make this album a true standout among not only the Grunge era but among music in general! I could not be without this CD! Review ID: 10000000001826960 Was this review helpful? Report this review Sort by: Reviews Review created: 04/10/07 by: 2 of 2 people found this review helpful. It was well before the album became a hit since it had been out nearly a year before the rest of the world heard its greatness. Anyway, I grew up in a rural community that didn't even have a Wal-Mart, but despite this, there was a group of people who would buy alternative tapes, dub them, and share them with friends. This was my first experience with Pearl Jam. Ten has been in my life ever since. I've worn out about four CDs, and continue to keep this album in regular rotation on my ipod. It's a brilliant album from beginning to end. While some may argue that it's front loaded, I find that each and every song has something to offer. Sometimes, I prefer to hear the lesser-known gems like "Porch," and "Release" over the still fabulous but overplayed Jeremy or my favorite rock-out song "Alive." My most beloved track on the album is "Black," a song I consider to be the most earnestly beautiful love song ever written. This is a perfect album, and certainly one every rock music fan should own. At ebay prices, Ten is worth every penny. Once you play it, you'll want to relive the experience again and again. Review ID: 10000000008258879 Was this review helpful? Not because Pearl Jam is my favorite band, they aren't. And not because Ten has my favorite song, it doesn't. Ten is excellent all the way through. Every last song is nothing short of a masterpiece. When the band was writing songs for Ten, Eddie Vedder had only been a member for a few days and yet somehow everything just worked. He sounds brilliant, the band sounds brilliant, and every single song flows into the next with beautiful ease. One thing I love about Ten is that it comes full circle, the last song ends the way the first begins making the album flow into itself continuously. THIS ALBUM WAS THE DEBUT ALBUM FROM PEARL JAM AND IS PROBABLY THE BEST THEY HAVE EVER DONE. IT IS A MUST HAVE TO ANY WHO LOVE GREAT MUSIC. THIS GRUNGE BAND IS ONE OF MANY TO THRIVE OUT THE SEATTLE SOUND EXPLOSION. WITH EDDIE VEDDER'S INTENSE VOCAL PRESENCE AND DRIVING GUITAR EDGE BEHIND HIM THIS ALBUM WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. THIS ALUM IS FOR FANS OF THE DOORS, LED ZEPPLIN, SOUNDGARDEN, AND STONE TEMPLE PILOTS. ENJOY!!! Review ID: 10000000001601392 Was this review helpful? Emotional, thought provoking lyrics on top of driving music. Hard rock at it's best, no matter what generation. Eddie Vedder changed the way people listened to music with his lyrics and viewpoints. One of the album's of the 90's, if not THE album of the 90's that really attracted people to the "grunge" scene. So what was the deal with all these musicians dressed in plaid? They had dark thoughts to sing about, that's what! Eddie sings about rape, murder, and dying. The music is a cross between bluesy riffs and Led Zeppelin... Its a great mix! Just don't care much for that intro/outro crap. Review ID: 10000000001349596 Was this review helpful? Report this review 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. I was a child of the early 90's. During my early adolescence I fed off bands such as Soundgarden, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction and Pearl Jam. This was definitely one of those albums that made me want to wake up every morning, just so I could play it while I got ready to go to school. It made want to get in the car, even if it was 114 degrees outside. Just so I could pop my tape into the car player. From Evenflow, the first PJ track I ever heard.. to Jeremy, the hymn of my generation... to Black... one of the most beautiful songs I have ever listened to. If you have not bought this album... What are you waiting for? Review ID: 10000000001325037 Was this review helpful? Report this review Review created: 01/27/06 by: 1 of 1 people found this review helpful. Report this review The album itself is fantastic--some of Pearl Jam's best songs in my opinion. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes rock, alternative, or grunge music--it's very unique. The only thing I disliked was how two songs on this CD skip, but I uploaded it to my computer before that happened. Review ID: 10000000012616522 Was this review helpful? A definite must have for anyone who likes this era and the Grunge scene. Seattle was placed on the map as the center of Grunge heartland and what was produced from it has become the best selling genre of music for years. After hit after hit on Ten, It will not disappoint. I have always liked Pearl Jam. Review ID: 10000000012170332 Was this review helpful? Report this review Jeremy is by far my favorite Pearl Jam song and this CD is worth getting for that one alone. That said, the rest of this album does not blow me away like it once did. I suppose it's because the market was flooded by copycat "artists" and this sound has now become tired. It's hard to believe that this was once cutting edge and inspired a generation. 3 Stars. Review ID: 10000000012145875 Was this review helpful? I would definitely do business with them again and recommend them highly... it was a great deal for me and I am very happy with everything. Thanks again! Review ID: 10000000011956173 Was this review helpful? Report this review I love the first number of songs, the last two are songs I've never heard on the radio and they were much more mellow. That might interest others, but they weren't my taste. Other than that, great cd for starters! The cd contains some foul language, but I believe only two songs have language and even then they use the word once. Review ID: 10000000010989500 Was this review helpful? Eddie poured all his emotions out on this release, tour and "PC" interviews. If you like grunge, GET THIS ONE FOR SURE!!! Review ID: 10000000009725540 Was this review helpful? These guys were probably The Who of their day, exploding out of somewhere way west of Spokane. As to why it's TEN? No, I wasn't buying records pell-mell so I don't know much about 1-9 and there are ELEVEN songs. This was probably their penultimate album, the one with most of what you remember them for. From the obvious throwback to Aqualung (Even Flow), the strange classic tale of finding life is NOT what you think (Alive), Black (saw heavy airplay but I never recall it until I hear it) and Jeremy... What can I say about Jeremy? He "spoke" in class yesterday! He was six feet deep from the first note. This is an album you will eventually search for unless the record company goes and puts out a greatest hits package, and then you probably will anyway. This band never seems to record a clinker, even if you never heard it on the radio. (If you like this music you are already thinking they don't play music on the radio anyway) Review ID: 10000000008700647 Was this review helpful? It is, by far, one of the most influential CD's of the modern rock and roll era. With tracks like Alive, Black & Jeremy, this album is a must have for anyone who claims to be a fan of music. Epic lyrics and driving beats covered by beautiful guitar work. They were way ahead of their time and continue, to this day, to impress with their ability to release quality music. This is where it all started. Grab the disc, sit back and listen to a group of rock legends! Review ID: 10000000008484506 Was this review helpful? Never really gave pearl jam a try until now. There are some really good tracks (Evenflow, Black, and Jermey especially) but some of the rest didn't really do it for me. If you're just poking around like me, I'd stick with the greatest hits cd. Review ID: 10000000006614343 Was this review helpful?
